This book is clearly written and an excellent guide for the high school student and parents.

I returned this book–it was pretty basic. Granted, I didn’t read the whole thing but after looking through it I realized that it didn’t offer anything beyond what I already knew from speaking to other parents who have been through the process and attending a general lecture in my area about this topic. If you are looking for a place to start, then this would be fine, but if you are looking for something outside of the mainstream, then this isn’t it.

I first checked this out of my local library (1st edition)and read it. You can’t miss with this book. It will give you incredible insight and perhaps balance anxieties you have if you are in the midst of preparing for college. It will give you confidence that you know all about the college selection process. If you’ve missed something, you will at least know what it is, and hopefully, have time to address it.

Read it early. Refer to it often (which is why I bought it used). If you have family or friends with kids in 8th-10th grades, tell them this book is out there.

I haven’t seen the 2nd edition and couldn’t tell what it adds from the inside cover, etc. that you can view online (they really should stress what’s new in the 2nd edition). My kids are still years from college, so by the time there are, I will buy the current version then.

  5. This book is filled with common sense, healthy psychological attitudes and good advice based on experince, not hype. It shows how the landscape of college admissions has changed since “we” were young, and how to successfully navigate it. I am an independent college consultant, and I recommend this great “how-to” to my clients.
